Basic Certificate Course on Gender and Development

 Background

Gender Training Institute (GTI) has gained a lot of experiences from conducting gender training strategies since 1993, where the organization has institutionalized a functioning system of conducting both regularized and tailor-made courses.   The core purpose of GTI is to provide learning and capacity development in support for transformative feminist movement building,  The organisation identifies itself as a gender and feminist training institute with the vision to become a regional centre of excellence in gender and feminist training, providing knowledge and skills for the purpose of social transformation. GTI upholds the participatory philosophy in its training and organisation’s management. policy engagement and social transformation at all levels within the country and beyond.

GTI in the year 2010 has planned to conduct a Basic Certificate Course in Gender and Development. The training which will last for six months is premised on the reality that over time now there has been a big wave of people wanting to become gender aware and acquire basic gender analysis skills that will enable them to act gender responsively in their daily operations and lay a foundation necessary for pursuing higher level courses in gender and feminist development. GTI is therefore inviting applicants from within the country to attend the course.

Course content

The course aims at enhancing gender/feminist  awareness, basic analytical skills and capacities to organize for change and be able to tackle issues of gender equity/equality  in a more progressive and  transformative manner.    The course also aims at enhancing coalition building among activist organizations   to address oppressive structures that the realization of gender equality, economic justice and women’s empowerment. 

Content Overview

The course will cover modules on to:

  • Animation and participatory learning
  • Social construction of gender identity
  • Basic concepts in gender and development
  • Her-stories of women struggles in development; lobbying and advocacy 
  •  Gender and Information and Communication Technology (ICT
  • Information sharing and networking.

Participants profile

The course  is open to middle level cadre Tanzanians who have completed secondary education and are interested in advancing themselves in gender/feminist and development issues. Others are professionals working with grassroots organizations, who wish to enhance gender responsiveness in their work. Others are actors in private institutions, gender trainers and other activists who have a strong commitment in women, and human rights issues. Key decision makers and practitioners at local level are also invited to apply.

 Methodology

The training will employ participatory animation methods which assure that participants and facilitators work in a highly participatory environment. They will employ a number of methods including interactive presentations, brainstorming, group   discussions, experience sharing through case studies and field interaction. Participants will also be involved in   field practical training.  

Participants will use the TGNP Library and internet to search for gender related information and to network.  

Course duration

Duration of the Basic Certificate Course in Gender and development will be 6 months. The first three month will be full time and the last three months will be project and practical field work.

Cost of participation

Participants will pay a fee of Tsh 1,265,000 that will cover tuition fee, training materials, use of internet and library services, field visits and morning/ afternoon tea/coffee. The fee does not cover living costs and travel costs to the venue and during training.
