About Gender Festival

 The Gender Festival is an open forum for likeminded individuals and organisations to come together to share experiences and knowledge, to celebrate achievements and assess challenges ahead, to strengthen networking and coalition-building, to build capacity and to contribute to public debate and plan collectively for social change from a feminist perspective.  

 The first Gender Festival was organised in 1996: Since then TGNP, FemAct and their grassroots partners have successfully organised a series of 10 Festivals on variety of Themes, reflecting the burning issues of the day.The number of Participants has steadily grown from around 400 in 1996 to over 5,000 in 2011.The Festival provides a unique space for activists from all walks of life to come together from every region of Tanzania, including Pemba and Zanzibar, as well as from neighbouring countries of Africa and beyond.

WHAT HAPPENED TO ‘A BETTER LIFE’ FOR THE POOR AND MARGINALISED?

 Tanzania Gender Networking Programme (TGNP) recognizes the challenge which the government has faced to prepare a budget in the context of the ongoing fiscal and economic crisis globally and locally, as well as the reduction of expected donor financing for General Budget Support. Improvement in financial management within the central government is also noted, although the poor performance within local government is alarming, especially given the long term goal of decentralizing social services delivery to LGAs. For marginalized women and their communities, especially in rural areas, every shilling counts – access to sustainable roads and transport, quality health care and safe and clean water is a matter of life and death.
